P0552 code definition

If the PCM has picked up on an issue with your vehicle’spower steering pressure sensor circuit, a code P0552 will be stored. This code is often stored along with P0551 and others related to power steering.

What the P0552 code means

Your vehicle’s PCM is able to keep tabs on the power steering pressure sensor because the latter sends it regular voltage inputs. The same goes for the steering angle sensor input signal. The PCM compares the two and, so long as they’re proportionate, there is no issue.

However, if the PCM calculates that the two are not in accord, it will store the P0552 code. Generally, it is more likely to happen when you’re driving around at low speeds.

In a lot of vehicles, the problem has to happen more than once before the P0522 code is registered. If it only happens once, that initial mishap is simply considered a “pending code.”

The same also goes for theCheck Engine Light. Many vehicles are designed not to trigger this light until two or more failure cycles have occurred.

What causes the P0552 code?

There are a handful of reasons your vehicle’s PCN may have stored P0552 code:

What are the symptoms of the P0552 code?

The P0552 code may be associated with a number of symptoms. Your power steering could actually leak fluid. When traveling at low speeds, you could find that your engine all of a sudden stalls. Most will also notice that their fuel efficiency begins to lack.

It should be noted that, sometimes, the driver actually won’t have any adverse symptoms to report. As we mentioned above, the Check Engine Light may not even come on.

How does a mechanic diagnose the P0552 code?

Your mechanic will begin by using an OBD-II scanner to access your PCM and see which codes have been stored. After that, they’ll most likely go to work by inspecting all the wires and connectors involved with your vehicle’s power steering. Fuses may need to be examined as well.

Moving on, the mechanic will check to see if the power steering works correctly. They’ll look forleakagesand confirm that the power steering fluid is clean.

Common mistakes when diagnosing the P0552 code

A lot of mechanics make the mistake of blaming the idle air control system for code P0552. As a result, they replace it, which turns out to be completely unnecessary. The mistake is made because many of the aforementioned causes the engine to stall out at low speeds.

How serious is the P0552 code?

The good news is that this code doesn’t represent anything that should have you too worried. You most likely won’t be getting in a serious accident because your vehicle stalls at low RPMs, for example.

That being said, the bad news is that your vehicle really won’t work correctly until you get this issue addressed. In that way, it’s very important you get this code fixed ASAP.

What repairs can fix the P0552 code?

Seeing as how a faulty power steering pressure sensor is usually to blame, your mechanic will most likely replace yours and that will be the end of it. Otherwise, they may:

  • Replace or repair the steering pump
  • Replace or repair the rack and pinion
  • Address any wires or electrical components that have been compromised
  • Replace the power steering fluid

Even though symptoms may be tolerable, the reasons for them can worsen, so it’s best to just have a mechanic repair this problem immediately.
